HIGH POINT - The American Furniture Hall of Fame Foundation has created a set of guidelines for companies wishing to preserve their history, photographs and memorabilia.
The guidelines - which are on the foundation's website at http://furniturehalloffame. com/Preserving_Our_History. aspx - address which documents are important to keep and how to store books, photos and printed materials to protect them from light, humidity, dust and other effects.
Proper storage is key because past documents can be used by a company's future management, and for legal, financial and marketing purposes, the foundation said.
"The heart of a company's memory is in its records, which offer a unique testimony to its history, milestones and achievements," said Joe Carroll, chairman of the Hall of Fame Legacy Board and president of Mc- Neill Communications. "Every company has its stories, told in photographs, written histories, memorabilia, videos and oral interviews. Whatever the format, there are steps that should be taken to preserve it so we save and collect our industry's history for future generations."
Companies can submit photos, books and other documents to the foundation, which is creating a timeline of the home furnishings industry. The timeline, to be posted online, will feature retail, manufacturing, merchandising and marketing trends as well as the supply chain.
Those who donate materials will be recognized and the materials can be considered a charitable donation. They can be sent to the American Furniture Hall of Fame Foundation, 202 Neal Place, High Point, N.C. 27262.
The foundation also is continuing its work on its Oral History book series. Each book tells of the story of a prominent home furnishings leader in their own words and with photos. For more information, visit www.furniturehalloffame.com.
