Ikea names finalists in Life Improvement Sabbatical contest

Winner will get $100,000 to help others

Tanya K. Merritte -- Furniture Today, January 6, 2011

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. — Top 100 store Ikea has selected five finalists for its Life Improvement Sabbatical contest, which will give one person the opportunity to take a yearlong sabbatical worth $100,000 to help improve the lives of others.

The contest is part of Ikea's Life Improvement Project, which is aimed at educating, inspiring and empowering people to improve their lives at home and in their community, the retailer said.

The winner will be decided by online voting, which runs through Jan. 17 at www.thelifeimprovementproject.com. Ikea will donate $1 for every vote, up to $50,000, to Save the Children's U.S. programs. The winner will be announced Jan. 31.

If the contest winner chooses to take a leave of absence from his or her job to work on the project, a portion of the $100,000 can be used for living expenses. The winter also will receive a three-day trip to a spa resort in Phoenix and participate in a session with Martha Beck, a life coach at O, The Oprah Magazine. The winner also will be featured in advertorials in the magazine.

The finalists are:

+ LaJuana Moser, a foster parent who started bags4kids, which offers bags filled with toys, personal care items and other necessities to foster children.

+ Ralph Johnson, who offers mentoring and educational opportunities in science to at-risk children.

+ Kyria Henry, who at age 12 founded paws4people and later paws4vets, which trains and pairs service dogs with veterans, disabled people and others needing assistance.

+ Philip Filner, a retired scientist who would like to create a lab using a greenhouse to conduct experiments and teach students skilled crafts and more about nature.

+ Elizabeth Woods, who created the support group Soul Widows after losing her son and her husband, a member of the military.
