New Barcalounger to offer first 3 groups in Las Vegas

Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, January 8, 2011

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — Barcalounger will make its official return to the U.S. market in three weeks when it unveils three collections of reclining furniture at the Las Vegas Market.
The new collections, which include about 50 SKUs, kick off the well-known brand's re-emergence after its former owner closed its Virginia factory in April and filed for bankruptcy protection.
Barcalounger President Larry Smith said the products are available on a containerdirect basis, although many models also will be stocked at warehouses in Martinsville, Va., and Riverside, Calif.
In Las Vegas, the company will show in space A-735 of the World Market Center.
The three collections are the transitional Metro Living, the contemporary Casual Comforts and the traditional Vintage Reserve. The product mix includes recliners, motion sofas and motion sectionals.
"We have developed a product mix consisting of three very distinctive design portfolios targeting different consumer audiences," Smith said.
He said the Las Vegas launch is the first phase of the planned revival of the Barcalounger name. The product to be shown at market is produced in Asia, but he said he hopes to announce a site for domestic production in early January.
The domestic factory also would produce special orders, which historically were a key part of Barcalounger's business.
In April, Barcalounger's former parent company, Hancock Park Associates, closed the Virginia factory that produced goods for Barcalounger and contact furniture resource American of Martinsville.
The new owner, HPC3 Furniture Holdings, is an affiliate of Hancock Park, but has no affiliation with American of Martinsville, whose assets were sold separately at a bankruptcy auction.
Smith said Barcalounger also plans to show at the April High Point Market.
