Tuesday panel offers look at 2011 business prospects

David Perry -- Furniture Today, February 1, 2011

David Perry Executive editorDavid Perry Executive editorThe day begins with a look at business prospects this year, and ends with a generous dose of charity. In between, there will be plenty of mattresses on display.

Tuesday at the Las Vegas Market will be a big day.

It begins at 8:30 a.m. at World Forum on the 16th floor of the World Market Center's Building B. Yours truly will be the host for an hour-long look at the new year in Mattressville.

Furniture/Today is teaming with the World Market Center for that event, which is open to all market attendees.
I'll be kicking the session off by unveiling

Furniture/Today's 2011 Consensus Bedding Forecast, the product of the best estimates of more than two dozen leading bedding producers. We have weighted that forecast to reflect the market share positions enjoyed by the majors, and we've got candid assessments from producers that account for more than 90% of all U.S. bedding shipments.

And that forecast reveals that this year will be ... well, you'll have to come to the session to find out.

After I've presented the forecast, we will hear from a panel of top bedding producers, suppliers and retailers. Jodi Allen, chief marketing officer of Sealy, joins Simmons President Tony Smith, Hickory Springs executive Dwayne Welch and Bedmart CEO Chuck Kill on the panel. I'm anxious to get their views on what lies ahead for the bedding industry this year.

I know time is at a premium at the Las Vegas Market, and I promise that we will wrap our session up by 9:30 a.m.

This event is part of the big bedding push being mounted by the WMC, and I don't need to remind you that bedding is a star performer in Las Vegas. It is always nice to see the mattress category in the bright lights.

Another important event unfolds Tuesday evening, off the WMC campus. This is the Ante 4 Autism poker tournament that Restonic exec Doug Krinsky has organized. The event, held at Binion's in downtown Las Vegas, will be hosted by a strong group of bedding retailers, producers and suppliers, including Coconis Furniture, Eclipse, Symbol, PMD Furniture Direct, Tempur-Pedic, Mattress Matters and Leggett & Platt. It begins at 7 p.m. and benefits autism research, a worthwhile cause.

Picking up on the card theme, Las Vegas offers a full house when it comes to the mattress category. I hope you have a great market, full of winners.
