Thomasville offered incentives to add 60 jobs at N.C. plant
Thomas Russell -- Furniture Today, March 23, 2011
THOMASVILLE, N.C. — Government officials in Davidson County, N.C. are offering Thomasville Furniture up to $24,000 to bring 60 new jobs to the area.
The incentives were approved this week by the Thomasville City Council and the Davidson County Board of Commissioners, local news sources reported.
In return, Thomasville Furniture would add 60 jobs and spent at least $800,000 on plant improvements over a two-year period. News sources reported that the jobs would be added in case goods production, although it was unclear which plant would add the jobs.
The company announced plans in September 2008 to add about 100 jobs at its Plant C in Thomasville for the production of chairs, tables and some beds. At the time, company President Ed Teplitz said the move was aimed at improving lead times compared with the shipment of goods from Asia, which involves at least three weeks on the water, not including production time.
The company also announced last fall its plans to close its Appomattox, Va., ready-to-assemble furniture plant, a move that would eliminate nearly 200 jobs by March 31. The company said it would move some of that production to company facilities in North Carolina.
Teplitz was unavailable for immediate comment Wednesday morning. However, local news sources said the company was expected to announce about the new jobs next week.
