There are More Rugs in High Point Than You Might Think
Jay McIntosh -- Furniture Today, April 28, 2011

News Editor Jay McIntosh is filling in this week for Lissa Wyman, whose column will return.
Several new rug exhibitors will be in town for this week's High Point Market, hoping to meet a few good retailers and designers. Or more than a few.
Karastan, Bokara, Masland and Neva are among the rug sources that are showing at the market for the first time or returning after some time away, in some cases an absence of years. They see High Point as an important avenue to reach prospective clients among furniture stores and designers.
Karastan will show in High Point for the first time since October 2005 in a space in the International Home Furnishings Center, C-409. Steve Roan, vice president of the Dalton, Ga.-based company, said the return fits right in to the company's recent strategy of remaking itself.
"In the past 15 months we've made significant changes to Karastan Rugs to reconnect with our past and refocus on the brand and the people we have here," said Roan. That has included targeting the furniture and design arenas for the line, which in addition to the Karastan brand includes Studio by Karastan and Mohawk Select.
Roan, who opened the High Point showroom March 31, a couple days before the official market kickoff, said he expects to stay busy. Because the line has exclusive distribution, the company generally schedules appointments rather than encouraging walk-in traffic, and the dance card for market week was filling up nicely.
While the company has been away from High Point for five and a half years, Roan has attended the past four markets without showing product, so he knows what to expect.
New Jersey-based Bokara Rug Co. is returning to the market after an absence of 10 years. President Jan Soleimani said he thinks the time is right for the company's return, and that he looks forward to hooking up with existing furniture and design clients and meeting some new ones. Bokara will be in Suites at Market Square, M-2048.
All told, there are more rugs in High Point than you might think. The High Point Market Authority's exhibitor list was up to 108 last week, and that may not include some of the newest entries. So if you're in town, look down occasionally. You might see something nice.
