New Mumbai furniture show set for November

Thomas Russell -- Furniture Today, May 19, 2011

MUMBAI, India — Two of the most recognized trade show organizers in Singapore are joining forces to launch a new furniture show in India this fall.

The India International Furniture Fair, organized by MP International Pte. Ltd. and the International Furniture Fair Singapore Pte. Ltd., will take place Nov. 16-18 at the Bombay Convention and Exhibition Center.

It is expected to showcase product from 150 companies from more than 10 countries in about 100,000 square feet. It will feature mostly residential furniture, but other categories such as office and contract furniture also will be represented.

Organizers also expect the initial show to attract about 5,000 trade visitors from in and outside India. Interest in the show has been strong, they said, with 40% of the space pre-bookings coming from India, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam.

Officials said the show will serve India's emerging furniture market and its growing demand for residential and retail space. They said the country has a growing middle class, which could help increase demand for higher-end goods.

Sylvia Phua, CEO of MP International, said that the first show will look to focus on "international premium brands."

"There is a great potential for major industry players to penetrate and win a slice of the luxury furniture market," she said in a statement. "Our vision is to develop the IIFF into a quality platform for international brands."

Andrew Ng, chairman of IFFS, said Singapore furniture industry leaders were encouraged by what they saw of the Indian furniture market during a November trade mission.

"We are optimistic about the Indian market," he said in a statement. "The World Bank's latest forecast predicts India's economy to grow over 8% next year, which is an encouraging escalation.... Industry sectors such as commercial and residential, retail and hospitality are set to expand and contribute to the demand for quality imported furniture."
