New Malaysia show planned for Sept. 6-10

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — A new furniture show in Malaysia in September will aim to connect manufacturers with international visitors traveling to other Asian home furnishings shows around that time, according to organizers.
The International Furniture Market will take place Sept. 6-10 at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang, the current site of the Export Furniture Exhibition (EFE) held each March.
The new event is organized by the Malaysian trade show promoter Promodex Exposition Consortium Sdn. Bdh. The show is expected to feature 250 to 300 exhibitors showing in about 600,000 square feet.
Most will be from Malaysia and elsewhere in Asia, including China, Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Korea, India, and Singapore, said Joseph Goh, CEO of the International Furniture Market. He said nearly half of the anticipated total has signed up to exhibit.
IFM organizers chose the dates to make the event convenient for buyers already in Asia to attend shows including Furniture China in Shanghai, which runs from Sept. 14-17, and the International Famous Furniture Fair Dongguan from Sept. 5-9. A show in Guangzhou also takes place in September, although its website hasn't yet posted dates.
Another option was to have the new show in March, but the later date was deemed better, Goh said.
"To be held in tandem with the other mega shows such as the one in Shanghai, IFM will help to ease the congestion in the March calendar, helping to provide a more relaxed pace amidst the frenetic activity so that exhibitors and buyers can meet, hold discussions and build stronger relationships," he said.
He added that buyers have told him that September is an ideal time to develop product lines for the coming year.
"IFM allows for the concentration of premium products all under one roof," Goh said. "More than just another ordinary furniture show, the event will be a spectacular showcase of the industry's latest trends and premium product offerings."
In addition to a range of case goods, upholstery, occasional and kitchen furniture, IFM will showcase mattresses, office furniture, youth furniture, and outdoor furniture. It also will feature some hospitality furniture, accessories and lighting, Goh said, adding that he believes the inaugural show will attract some 4,000 buyers.
More information is available on the event's website at www.ifm.net.my.
