Vietnamese furniture makers worry about possible U.S. duties

Issue gets new attention in mainstream media

Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, June 6, 2011

HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam — Vietnamese news source VietnamNetBridge is reporting that the Vietnamese furniture industry is once again voicing concerns about the prospect that the United States could pursue an antidumping case raised against that nation's wood bedroom furniture producers.

The latest concerns were raised in response to a May 23 article in the Washington Post that cites how bedroom furniture production has shifted from China to Vietnam. Furniture/Today reported on this shift last September as part of its three-part series on the antidumping case involving wood bedroom furniture from China.

The VietnamNetBridge article discusses how factory owners that operated furniture plants in China have opened new facilities in Vietnam.

It includes comments from Nguyen Thi Thu Trang, a member of the Trade Remedy Council of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, saying that Vietnamese producers are fearful that the United States could impose antidumping duties on their products.

Such duties could make those products more expensive for U.S. importers to buy.
