American Leather's Bob Duncan discusses manufacturing in profile

DALLAS — Bob Duncan had no production experience when he and Sanjay Chandra founded American Leather in 1990, but he has used a lean manufacturing approach to build the company into a $70 million enterprise, he tells IndustryWeek.
In a question-and-answer piece, the American Leather CEO says in an interview with the magazine's Josh Cable that the company modeled itself after Toyota, the epitome of the lean approach in the automotive world.
The Dallas-based furniture company has carved out a niche with an approach that can deliver customized high-end upholstery in three weeks or less, the magazine said.
