Century Furniture to receive Made in America award

Honor salutes outstanding U.S.-made products

Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, June 8, 2011

HICKORY, N.C. — Century Furniture will be honored on July 4 by Made: In America, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit educational group that seeks to help revitalize U.S. commerce in a global economy.

Century FurnitureCentury’s display at the Made in America exhibit in Washington at the D.C. Design Center and the Lincoln Cottage will include this 44-217 settee and 11-819 side chairs.

Century will receive the group's 2011 Best: Made in America, recognizing the case goods and upholstery manufacturer and its employees for their outstanding U.S.-made products.

Century was founded in 1947 by Harley F. Shuford and is in its third generation of family ownership and operation. The award is a result of a year-long search to identify a company committed to U.S. manufacturing, according to Made: In America.

The company will receive the award at the annual Take Pride in America celebration held at the U.S. Capitol on July 4.

"Century Furniture has a demonstrated commitment to the highest standards of good corporate citizenship," James De Lorbe, chairman and CEO of Made: In America, said in a statement. "Throughout an era in which manufacturing has continuously shifted overseas, the company has a 60-plus year track record of ongoing production in the United States and to providing meaningful jobs to American workers. The company is widely recognized for its innovation and leadership within its industry and has received countless honors for community involvement."

"We are humbled and gratified to be selected for this honor," said Century President and CEO Eric Schenk. "Throughout Century's history we have always tried to not only produce the highest quality furniture we can, but also uphold the highest standards of corporate citizenship."

Schenk added that company founder Shuford "was a staunch supporter of the local community and invested his time and personal assets in numerous community projects from the local college to the founding of the Arts Museum. As a result we have inherited a corporate legacy for giving back that we all honor and strive to uphold."
