HIGH POINT - Occasional furniture offers a way to spruce up a room without spending a lot of money. For less than $500, many manufacturers offer products that will do just that. Here's a selection of occasional pieces that can add a touch of functional style to a home environment for consumers on a budget.
WHAT'S HOT: The Modi Console by Calligaris FEATURES: The table features a contemporary shape and clean lines and appears to float against the wall, where it is mounted using brackets. The table is solid wood with cherry or wenge veneer. PRICE: $299 WHY IT'S SELLING: Mike Solac, owner of Scandia Furniture in Minneapolis, has been selling the Modi console for at least five years. While the piece is not cutting-edge contemporary, it is still high design with an affordable price, giving it broad appeal, Solac said. It's often shown as an entry table coupled with a mirror, he added. "I doubt there's a retailer anywhere that carries Calligaris that doesn't know that's a good selling item," he said.
WHAT'S HOT: Sitcom's Allison table FEATURES: The table has the look of a casual accent with a deeply painted finish and relaxed elegant style. It has a clear glass top and solid birch construction. PRICE: $269 WHY IT'S SELLING: Consistently one of CSN Stores' top sellers, the table is affordable with a lot of style, according to Jessica Arnold, category manager. She said that the group's design, with its glass top and brace details, allows it to work in a modern space or a traditional-with-a-twist living room. "It's a great piece to update and liven up your living room without costing an arm and a leg," Arnold said.
WHAT'S HOT: The No. 383-316 jewelry armoire by Powell Co. FEATURES: The armoire features a fluted top and skirt, contemporary style, three small lined and divided drawers, four large drawers, two side-swing doors on edges and square knobs in a shiny brushed chrome finish. PRICE: $275, as listed last week on Nebraska Furniture Mart's website WHY IT'S SELLING: Tammy Wilson, a buyer for Nebraska Furniture Mart in Omaha, Neb., says her best seller from Powell Co. is this jewelry armoire. It has been in NFM's lineup since 2008. "It sells well because it has an attractive design and finish, provides ample storage, and is a great overall value," Wilson said.
WHAT'S HOT: Magnussen Home Furnishings' Madison occasional tables FEATURES: The collection features a warm oak finish, slate table tops with autumn color tones, metal trim, functional lift top and caster base for ease of movement. PRICE: Cocktail is $399 WHY IT'S SELLING: According to Bob Price, senior vice president of merchandise at Warren, Mich.-based Art Van, the biggest selling feature is the storage the table provides through the lift-top feature.
