Motion chairs (including recliners, gliders/swivel rockers, etc.) in furniture stores
  • Accounted for 8% of furniture store sales in 2009.
  • Accounted for 7% of selling space in furniture stores in 2009.
  • Median SKUs, 35 and median number of lines, 4.
  • Median best-selling price points for a leather recliner, $625 and $399 for a fabric-covered recliner.

Reclining chairs - from Upholstery Fabric and Style Survey
  • At low price points ($799 and below), microdeniers captured the biggest slice of the unit market share pie at 44%. At medium price points ($800 to $1,499), microdeniers gathered 30% of unit market share. 
  • Leather/suede acquired a 64% share at high ($1,500 and above) price points for units sold in 2008.
  • Contemporary styles reigned as market share leaders for reclining chairs across all price points, garnering 69% at low price points, 50% at medium price points and at high price points, 44%.

Consumers and recliners
  • Nearly seven out of 10 consumers expect to pay less than $800 for a leather recliner; while almost three-fourths of consumers expect to spend less than $500 for a fabric recliner.   
  • More than one-half of consumers shop traditional furniture stores first when looking to purchase a recliner.
