ISPA: Bedding units down 2.2% for 2016

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Bedding units were down 2.5% in the fourth quarter and were down 2.2% for the full year, according to the latest Bedding Market Quarterly issued by the International Sleep Products Assn.

The report, which presents a snapshot of performance by companies generating a majority of the industry’s bedding shipments, shows a brighter picture for dollar performance, with the wholesale value of bedding shipments increasing 4.3% in the fourth quarter and 1.7% for the year.

The average unit price for mattresses was up a healthy 8.9% in the fourth quarter, to $391.28, and was up 4.5% for the full year, to $373.13, the ISPA report said.

Final figures on 2016 performance will not be available for a few more months, but the quarterly report documents a fourth quarter climate that posed some challenges for the industry.

Mattress units were down 2.5% in the fourth quarter, while foundation units were down 2.4%. The dollar value of mattress shipments was up 6.2% in that quarter, but foundation unit dollars were down 6.3%. The average unit price for foundations dropped 3.9% in the fourth quarter, to $77.20.

The ISPA quarterly reports do not include adjustable beds, a fast-growing segment in the industry.
