HICKORY, N.C. — Jay Reardon, longtime president of high-end producer Hickory Chair, played the straight man during a segment of "The Daily Show" on Wednesday that humorously compared Hickory Chair products with those sold by Swedish retailer Ikea.
Reardon led a correspondent from the popular Comedy Central show through his factory and showroom, and his thoughts about working conditions and the quality of his product were interspersed with comments from a union official who is trying to organize workers at an Ikea furniture factory in Danville, Va.
Some workers at the Virginia facility have complained of low pay and poor working conditions, including a lack of bathroom breaks.
