Consumers Open to Construction Suggestions
Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, July 9, 2011
This research provides an interesting window on consumers' thoughts on the type of mattress they plan to buy this year. The big winner - "not sure" - garnered an overwhelming share of the responses, at 62%.
Looking for good news for the innerspring side of the ledger? Beds featuring innersprings were cited by 24% of the consumers, with 10% saying simply they plan to buy an innerspring bed and another 14% saying they plan to buy a bed with an innerspring core cushioned with specialty foam. Those types of beds are called hybrids.
Looking for good news for specialty sleep? Beds including latex, memory foam, specialty foam and air - were cited by 26% of consumers in their buying plans this year.
The memory foam finding is a strong one, with 10% of respondents saying they plan to buy a memory foam bed. Many of those beds sell at premium price points, and interest in that category remains on the upswing.
But perhaps the most interesting finding is the very large number of consumers who say they aren't sure what type of mattress construction they plan to purchase. That high number opens the door for education on retail sales floors, where the business of finding the right mattress for a consumer actually takes place. The large number of undecided consumers means opportunities for retail sales associates to show consumers a variety of types of sleep systems.
Collectively, the survey data provides a useful roadmap of consumers' feelings about various sleep systems. And that roadmap says consumers have open minds about mattress types.
