Alabama's Mazer Begins GOB Sale
Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, July 13, 2011
HOMEWOOD, Ala. - Mazer Discount Superstore, a longtime retailer of furniture, appliances and floor coverings in the Birmingham area, began a going-out-of-business sale Thursday and will soon close its doors for good.
The company, operated by the Mazer family since 1932, has been struggling in recent years due to the slumping housing market and the recession, said company President Michael Mazer, the third generation of the family to run the business.
He described the sale as "a mixed blessing" because initial response to the event has been overwhelmingly positive. However, he said it's depressing when he realizes the business won't be open much longer.
The retailer has about 250,000 square feet of retail and warehouse space at a single location in Homewood. About half the sales come from furniture, and the remainder is divided among appliances, floor coverings and building supplies.
Mazer said he has no timetable to complete the GOB sale and isn't certain what he will do after the business is closed.
"My family and I have been serving consumers in the Birmingham area for 78 years, and I hope to be in this business in the town that I love," Mazer said.
