A huge design installation at the Brooklyn Museum uses more than 2,440 yards of billowing fabric donated by Glen Raven.
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Performance fabric Sunbrella, known for its stain and wear-resistant qualities on upholstery, has been given another job as part of a special design installation at the Brooklyn Museum.
The installation, in the museum's 10,000-square-foot Great Hall, uses more than 2,440 yards of the fabric donated by the brand's parent, Glen Raven Custom Fabrics. The exhibit is known as reOrder and was designed by the Brooklyn-based architectural firm Situ Studio.
The installation uses Sunbrella Canvas Natural fabric that is pleated and stretched over metal frames to create the illusion of growth and change among the hall's 16 columns. Fabric structures vary in size and volume and are completed by benches and tables at the display's bases.
Sunbrella was selected because of its strength and performance characteristics, including reducing resistance to fading, stains and spills, the company said.
"This is a unique opportunity for Sunbrella fabrics to be part of a high-level installation that will be seen by thousands of people," said Gina Wicker, design and creative director for Glen Raven. "We are honored that Sunbrella was selected and cannot imagine a better way to illustrate the continued evolution of the Sunbrella brand during our 50th anniversary."
The exhibit will remain open through Jan. 25, 2012.
