LAS VEGAS — Promotional to mid-priced upholstery maker E.J. Lauren has expanded its showroom space here, for the third time in three visits.

The two-year-old California company started here with 3,000 square feet, then enlarged to 6,000, and is showing this week in 14,000 square feet in space B-1265, according to owner Tony Ocampo.
Ocampo has been in the industry for 25 years or more. He was previously president of La Mirada, Calif.-based Golden Oaks, which he sold to Klaussner in 2002 but stayed with as the division's president until 2007.
After his non-compete expired, Ocampo said he saw an opportunity to start a domestic upholstery producer, which would be free of problems facing importers who buy from China, such as long lead times and rising costs.
"Retailers are looking for a quicker turnaround, not only in inventory but in special orders," he said. "I said it's time to get back in the business. We started two years ago and it's been very successful. We're growing nicely."
E.J. Lauren targets medium-sized to large accounts and delivers in two to three weeks, including custom orders, he said. The company has a 50,000-square-foot facility and has grown to 80 employees
Its line starts with a small offering at $399 retail for a sofa but its bread-and-butter is $599 to $799, Ocampo said. The company is expanding this market with bonded leather sectionals as well as a down-and-feather story.
