MDS to Buy Velvet Plant in India

ATLANTA - Textile supplier MDS Fabrics says it plans to buy a factory in India in a move to become a major supplier of velvet to the furniture industry and other markets.
MDS President Sunil Eamani said he will be moving to India next year and plans to invest in a factory there he's been partnering with.
Eamani, a board member of the International Textiles Market Assn., said MDS introduced new velvets at ITMA's Showtime fabric fair in High Point in June "and the reaction was really good. There's really a huge gap of suppliers of velvet in quantity and quality who are able to deliver in a timely manner."
Eamani said the India factory's owner is retiring and his sons don't want to take over.
The factory has an in-house dye and print capability.
MDS is a global seller of crewel, silk and velvets to furniture manufacturers and other markets that include retail, catalogues, the international design market and the like. The company also has an online store that sells finished goods including drapes, bedding, quilts, throws, shawls and other products.
MDS is known best for its high-end crewel - hand-embroidered in wool on base fabrics sewn by village craftspeople. The work is exquisite and expensive, says Eamani.
He said MDS has made crewel into a good niche business. "Nobody would touch crewel with a 10-foot pole before I entered the market," he said.
As the company grows its manufacturing capabilities in India, it also has expanded its warehousing space in the U.S., opening a new warehouse in South Carolina that doubles the size of its 5,000-square-foot space in Atlanta.
