Cefili leaves Furniture First; Kauffman named CEO

Kauffman becomes the buying group's third leader in two years.

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — Furniture First promoted Andrew Kauffman to CEO this week following the resignation of Dino Cefili from the post last week, its third chief in just under two years.

The home furnishings buying group declined to elaborate on the circumstances behind the departure of Cefili, on the job for only seven months.

Kauffman joined Furniture First in 2011 as director of mattresses and led the launch of the group’s Mattress 1 st store concept, an extension of its member-exclusive private label mattress line built by Serta. He was promoted to chief operating officer in 2016.

There are no immediate plans to fill that position.

Furniture First Chairman Art Scholet, owner of Scholet Furniture, sent a message to members commending Kauffman’s performance and outlining the board’s priorities for Kauffman’s new role, according to a release. They included “growing membership, strengthening vendor partnerships, expanding the Mattress 1 st retail store program, increasing Tools 2B First enrollment, and developing performance groups for the members of Furniture First,” the group said.

Kauffman will be attending the High Point Market, in and out of the Furniture First showroom space G-770 in the International Home Furnishings Center.

Cefili joined Furniture First in early October, coming from Top 100 company Sleepy’s — later acquired by Houston-based Mattress Firm — where he worked for 16 years and was a divisional vice president of sales and a regional vice president.

He replaced former Furniture First President Bill Hartman, who resigned in May 2015.

Furniture First members generate combined annual sales of more than $2 billion and operate 469 stores in 47 states. The group will host its Annual Symposium, May 15-17, at the JW Marriott in Phoenix.
