HIGH POINT - Bedding was the most purchased furniture product last year and that trend will continue this year, according to a big consumer survey conducted by Furniture/Today.
The results show, yet again, the power packed by the mattress segment.
By the numbers, the 10.8% of U.S. households planning to buy bedding this year translates to 12.2 million households.
No other furniture category comes close to bedding's sales potential this year. Stationary sofas are the next-highest category on consumers' buying plans list, with 7.9% of households planning to buy a stationary sofa this year.
After that, households' buying plans drop off significantly, as the list above illustrates.
This data provides a handy guide for full-line furniture stores looking to maximize their sales potential this year. In a nutshell, those retailers should make sure they have strong bedding assortments.
Generally speaking, households say their bedding buying plans are two to three times higher than for most other furniture categories.
Consumers are definitely planning to buy mattresses this year. Smart retailers are ready to meet those mattress needs.
