Levin Furniture to grand-open 16th store this week

Includes new area showing locally made goods

Clint Engel -- Furniture Today, September 12, 2011

GREENSBURG, Pa. — Levin Furniture will grand open its seventh Pittsburgh-area showroom and 16th store overall here this weekend, a 53,000-square-foot store at the Westmoreland Mall.

The store, which soft opened during the Labor Day weekend, will make it official starting Thursday, with a ribbon cutting and charity check presentation followed by grand opening activities Saturday.

Designed by Tom Zwierzelewski, director of store design and merchandising, the showroom features a new Levin Rug Market with hand-woven rugs from around the world, a Levin Mattress Center, a Natuzzi gallery and a "Power Lane" gallery featuring power motion upholstery.

The store also features Levin's signature Sally's Café, where customers can receive complimentary refreshments.

A new addition for Levin here is an area showcasing locally made furniture, including Amish bedroom and dining rooms made in Amish cooperatives in Ohio.

The store is Levin's second in Westmoreland County, joining its original showroom in Mount Pleasant, where the company was founded in 1920. There are collages throughout the store featuring local points of interest from Seton Hill University to the Greensburg train station to Arnold Palmer's plane at Latrobe Airport.

Thursday will feature check presentations to the Red Cross of Western Pennsylvania and the Westmoreland County Food Bank. The public will be invited to attend grand opening festivities on Saturday from noon to 6 p.m.

The store originally was slated to open earlier this year, but Levin ended up switching gears, extending a clearance event while it worked to open its Avon, Ohio, store in July and rebuilding its bedding store in Pittsburgh under a new name, Levin Mattress.

CEO Robert Levin said the company has been pleased with the initial response since the soft opening.

"From a merchandising perspective, we've tried to add some additional domestic product," Levin said, noting the new Amish furniture from Daniel's of Ohio and the Cedar and Barnwood collection from new vendor Fireside Lodge.

Levin has branded its in-store bedding departments as Levin Mattress, which mirrors the name of the sleep shop chain it will launch this year (see story).

Levin is No. 40 on Furniture/Today's Top 100 with estimated 2010 furniture, bedding and accessories sales of $145.9 million.
