Architectural rendering of the proposed Ikea for Cary, N.C.
If approved by the local government, the proposed 359,000-sqquare-foot store would sit on a 15-acre site in Cary, N.C., near Interstate 40 and Cary Towne Boulevard, the Top 100 company said in a release.
The Swedish home furnishings giant opened its first North Carolina store in Charlotte in 2009. It operates 43 U.S. stores and more than 390 stores in 48 countries.
In a statement, Ikea U.S. President Lars Peterson said the proposed new store “would complement our strong presence established in Charlotte and eventually provide customer in Central and Eastern North Carolina an Ikea store closer to them.
The store would have the same basic features the retailer is well-known for — the same architectural design; the nearly 10,000 exclusive furniture and other home items; 50 room settings, three model home interiors; a supervised children’s play area; and a 450-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties and other items.
Ikea said the store would create more than 500 jobs during the construction phase and employ about 300 people when it opens. Known for its many sustainability practices, the retailer said it also will evaluate potential on-site power generation.
Ikea is No. 3 on Furniture Today’s most recent Top 100 U.S. Furniture Stores report to be released Monday, with estimated U.S. Furniture, bedding and accessory sales of $3.2 billion in its fiscal year ended Aug. 31.
