MIAMI - Biscayne Bedding International, a bedding producer based here, has become the fifth licensee for the Nature's Rest specialty sleep brand, one that officials say is poised to increase its presence in the bedding marketplace.
Biscayne Bedding, founded in 1949 and still owned and operated as a family business, is headed by Jan and Silke Wettergren.
Jan, who is president and oversees operations, has two decades of bedding experience including stints as vice president of operations at Serta and senior vice president with Spring Air. His wife, Silke, is working in sales and marketing.
The latex-driven Nature's Rest brand, founded by bedding veteran Rick Robinson several years ago, was purchased by Ed Bates in 2009, when he also acquired the Spring Air brand. Bates, the longtime Spring Air licensee in Boston, owns the Nature's Rest and Spring Air brands under different ownership structures.
William Huertas, president of Spring Air Northeast, the Spring Air operation in Boston, also serves as president of Nature's Rest. Rick Robinson, president of Spring Air, is a consultant to Nature's Rest.
Four Spring Air plants in Pennsylvania, Utah, South Carolina and Massachusetts are Nature's Rest licensees, while Biscayne Bedding is the first independent Nature's Rest licensee, Huertas said. Biscayne produces its own bedding lines in addition to Nature's Rest.
Huertas said Nature's Rest plans to adopt a higher profile in the coming year as it seeks to gain market share.
