Room & Board, Circle Furniture, NATeco meet sustainability standard
First to qualify for SFC's Silver Exemplary status

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Sustainable Furnishings Council has named Room & Board, Circle Furniture and NATeco as the first retailers to qualify for its new Silver Exemplary status in business operations.
The SFC's revised Retailer Standard, released earlier this year, includes performance measures such as wood sourcing, use of reclaimed materials, energy conservation, on-site recycling programs, training and education.
The new standard is based on the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) model, which recognizes silver, gold and platinum levels.
SFC founding member Room & Board, a Top 100 company based in Minneapolis, sources more than 85% of its products domestically. It uses skylights and motion-activated lights at its distribution centers and is converting all stores to electricity-saving LED, or light-emitting diode, lighting.
"Room & Board is excited to be one of the first retailers to be recognized as Silver Exemplary and will continue our work to improve our contribution to sustainability," Steve Freeman, vendor resource manager at Room & Board and vice president of the SFC, said in a press release. He said the majority of the retailer's products were made of sustainably harvested woods and other materials.
Circle Furniture, a five-store Boston-area chain, has a recycling program and sources 50% of its inventory from within a 500-mile radius, according to the SFC. In addition, about 30% of Circle's case goods have finishes that are low in VOC, or volatile organic compounds.
NATeco is an online dealer of eco-friendly furniture run by Tom Megna, a longtime manufacturer and importer of sustainable goods, the SFC said. About 20% of its products use certified wood and 20% are indoor air quality GreenGuard certified.
