Ethan Allen Enters AHFA's Environmental Program
Heath E Combs -- Furniture Today, September 29, 2011
HIGH POINT - Ethan Allen Global has begun implementing the American Home Furnishings Alliance's environmental management system created for the residential furniture industry.
The program, Enhancing Furniture's Environmental Culture or EFEC, was designed as a platform for continuous improvement through resource management and energy conservation, while reducing a company's environmental impact.
Ethan Allen said it will merge EFEC into its existing Environmental Health and Safety Management System at its domestic upholstery plant, three case goods plants and one home accents plant.
Ethan Allen will also implement EFEC at two distribution centers and about 20 retail service centers. It plans to eventually extend the EFEC program to all of its 150 company-owned stores, a press release said. It will be the first implementation of the EFEC program at the retail level, according to the AHFA.
"By implementing EFEC, we strengthen our continuing commitment to creating a safe workplace and protecting the natural environment for the benefit of our employees, the community and the company," Ethan Allen Chairman, President and CEO Farooq Kathwari said.
The AHFA launched EFEC in 1999. Participating companies undergo an annual maintenance audit to ensure continual improvement at each registered facility.
Through the program, companies reduce their water and energy consumption and improve recycling efforts. The program is in place at more than 50 furniture manufacturing facilities in 11 states.
Ethan Allen also plans to pursue Sustainable by Design registration, which can be sought by companies that adopt EFEC. That program calls on companies to calculate a baseline carbon footprint and to develop strategies for reducing that footprint, along with a social responsibility program that includes a code of conduct for overseas suppliers.
