Sleep Train Acquires 3-Store Christian's Mattress Xpress
Clint Engel -- Furniture Today, September 29, 2011
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sleep Train has acquired three-store Christian's Mattress Xpress, expanding into the Fresno and Bakersfield, Calif., markets.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Christian's Mattress Xpress operates stores in Visalia and Fresno and a warehouse with an outlet store in Fowler, Calif. The stores average 5,500 square feet.
Citrus Heights, Calif.-based Sleep Train said part of its strategic plan is to expand its brand into new markets in California. The company said it will convert the three newly acquired stores to Sleep Train by November and will open at least one more store in the area this year. It plans to open four to five stores in 2012.
"This expansion will bring Sleep Train into two of the top 10 largest cities in the state, as well as the fast-growing community of Visalia," said Sleep Train CEO Dale Carlsen. "With economic conditions improving, we saw an opportunity to expand our reach into a brand new region where demand is high for quality sleep products and a superior shopping experience."
Ron Gonzalez, founder of Christian's Mattress Xpress - which started in 1992 as Christian's Solid Wood Furniture and became a mattress store in 2007 - will stay on to oversee and support the transition of the stores, Sleep Train said in a release.
"It's an incredible opportunity for my team," Gonzalez said. "They will join one of the few employee-owned companies in the United States, become part of a talented team that represents the largest mattress retail brand on the West Coast, and be able to contribute to their community through an award-winning philanthropic program."
Bedding specialist Sleep Train is No. 22 on Furniture/ Today's Top 100 with estimated furniture, bedding and accessories sales last year of $313.4 million at 231 stores on the West Coast. It recently created an employee stock ownership plan. Suppliers include Sealy, Serta, Simmons, Stearns & Foster and TempurPedic.
Sleep Train said the addition of another distribution center will give customers in Fresno, Visalia and Bakersfield access to its same-day delivery service.
