ALEXANDRIA, Va. - The mattress industry turned in a strong performance in August, with bedding units rising 3.1% while the dollar value of bedding shipments soared 12.3%.
The International Sleep Products Assn.'s Bedding Barometer for August reflects the performance of 18 U.S. bedding producers accounting for a majority of bedding units shipped each year.
For the first eight months of the year, the report said, bedding units are up 1.4% while the dollar value of bedding shipments is up 7.8%.
The big increase in the dollar value of bedding shipments in August was accompanied by an 8.9% increase in the average unit price, which was $204.53 in August.
For the January-August period, the average unit price is up 6.3%, to $202.60.
The ISPA report covers companies who account for about 65% of total bedding unit shipments and about 74% of the wholesale value of those shipments, according to ISPA.
