HICKORY, N.C. — Hickory Springs Mfg., a major furniture and bedding components supplier, has named board member David Colburn as its president and CEO.

Colburn, who has been on Hickory Springs' board of directors since 2009, will assume his new post Jan. 1. He succeeds Don Coleman, who is retiring after a 39-year career with the company.

Colburn has an extensive background in the automotive industry and has held a variety of technology, operations and manufacturing posts. His resume includes the presidency of six different entities that are automotive industry suppliers.

Most recently, he headed the global manufacturing industry group of Electronic Data Systems. He also was president of Del-Met Corp., MTD Automotive, AP Parts International's North American aftermarket division, and Repcoparts Corp.

"David's proven ability to lead will be a huge advantage in the day-to-day operation and long-term success of Hickory Springs," said Hickory Spring Chairman Tom Pierce. "His business record in areas such as management, strategic planning and global manufacturing is outstanding, and we look forward to seeing how the company will continue to grow and diversify under his direction."

After Coleman announced his retirement several weeks ago, Pierce said the board's search committee investigated "a number of candidates" before settling on Colburn.

"He brings outstanding traits and experiences to the office of president and CEO, including a great passion for the long-term success of Hickory Springs, a clear vision for how the company can grow in the future, strong organizational skills and exceptional communications, skills," Coleman said. "I feel confident that upon my retirement that I am leaving Hickory Springs and its employees in very capable hands."
