ATLANTA — Howard Young's 2011 Atlanta Golf Classic raised more than $141,000 for pancreatic cancer research led by the Translational Genomics Research Institute.
The 2nd annual tournament drew 132 golfers on Oct. 3 to the Capital City Crabapple Golf Club in Alpharetta, Ga., kicking off the fall fundraising drive of the Seena Magowitz Foundation.
Proceeds support TGen's international initiative to eradicate pancreatic cancer, the fourth leading cause of cancer death in America.
"I am so very pleased and humbled by the generosity of all those who participated in this second year of our golf tournament," said Young, an Atlanta businessman and pancreatic cancer survivor. "As someone who is living proof of TGen's amazing patient care, I know how important these contributions are to the future success of our pancreatic cancer research."
The Atlanta Golf Classic was oversold for a second year and exceeded last year's inaugural tournament donations of $105,000. Young acknowledged the efforts of the co-hosts John Morley and Tom Vitale, and his parents, Bill and Jane Young.
The Morley Cos., an Atlanta commercial restoration company, said it appreciated the strong local support the event received in a challenging economic climate.
Next up is the 2011 Seena Magowitz Celebrity Golf Classic, set for Dec. 3 at the Arizona Biltmore resort in Phoenix.
"I applaud Howard Young and everyone involved in the Atlanta Golf Classic," said Roger Magowitz, president of the Seena Magowitz Foundation, named for his mother, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2001. "We expect that success to carry forward to our signature event in December at the Arizona Biltmore."
The Arizona Biltmore is a new venue for the Phoenix tournament, now in its ninth year, and Magowitz is expecting the biggest turnout ever.
