Furniture designers honored with ASFD Pinnacle Awards

 Mirren Point/Harbor by Les Killian, Jesse Schopmeyer and Gary Huffstetler for Broyhill, won the Pinnacle in casual dining.  Universal’s New Lou, an update on Louis Phillippe styling designed by Mike Warren, Shannon Lookabill and Andrea Otto, was the winner in formal dining. HIGH POINT — Designers in 16 furniture, accessories and lighting categories were honored here Monday night with ASFD Pinnacle Awards.

Stanley Furniture's Coastal Living Resort won in the major collections category for designers Richard Schroeder, Denis Kissane and Gary Hokanson.

Pinnacle judges commented: "When it comes to the best of show, the Coastal Living Resort collection at Stanley Furniture translates an impressive designer approach to relaxed living at an exceptional value. Eclectic design elements come alive in mixed media plus a range of subdued colors."

The American Society of Furniture Designers hosted the market banquet to announce the 16th annual Pinnacle winners.

Furniture/Today is the major underwriter of the Pinnacle Awards. Other sponsors include AF Lighting, Continental Brass, EarthCare Inside, Furniture Design Studios, High Point Market Authority, Hickory Springs Mfg., Home Furnishings Business, the International Home Furnishings Center, Leggett & Platt, Market Square & Suites and Sherwin-Williams.

Winners in other categories are:

• Occasional tables, Rafferty console by Cindy Hall and Erica Wingo for Hooker Furniture. Judges' comments: "The products found in Hooker Furniture's Melange collection offer an unexpected, eclectic blending of colors, textures and materials. The Rafferty console gives a sylish, decorator look at an affordable price. Inspired by an Old World compass, the design has timely ‘right now' style with good scale and a rustic charisma with its planked top and stone-like finish."

• Occasional storage, Avery Avenue cabinet by Jesse Schopmeyer Les Killian and Gary Huffstetler for Broyhill. Judges' comments: "The Avery Avenue collection from Broyhill has a very salable commercial appeal with its updated traditional shapes and exceptional value. In the occasional storage category, this cabinet offers lots of functionality options and is detailed with distinctive hardware."

• Juvenile furniture, MIX Young America by Richard Schroeder and Denis Kissane for Stanley Furniture. Judges' comments: "In the juvenile furniture category, MIX by Young America provides an abundance of versatility and storage in a small footprint. The collection has a youthful feel, but has adult substance through its retro look plus broad attraction for both sexes. The judges admire the clear natural wood finishes and the updated allure of the storage pieces."

• Casual dining, Mirren Point/Harbor by Les Killian, Jesse Schopmeyer and Gary Huffstetler for Broyhill. Judges' comments: "The clean, compact design of the casual dining pieces in the Mirren Harbor/Mirren Point collections by Broyhill is ideal for decorating in small spaces. With a nod toward British Colonial carvings and louvered detailing, the collection is merchandised at very attractive price points."

• Formal dining, New Lou by Mike Warren, Shannon Lookabill and Andrea Otto for Universal Furniture. Judges' comments: "New Lou by Universal Furniture updates Louis Phillippe styling in a refreshed look that's ideal for today's less formal lifestyle. Whether you consider it "contemporized traditional" or "almost transitional," the reborn approach has a unique lure in the formal dining category. We applaud the distinctive combination of multiple materials.

• Motion upholstery, Ellie recliner sofa by Albert Choy for Moroni. Judges' comments: "This clean, contemporary motion upholstery design from Moroni screams ‘sit on me!' The comfortable reclining sofa has nice details and features, and offers a huge value for shoppers."

• Stationary upholstery, Evasion sectional by Normand Couture for Couture International. Judges' comments: "The versatility of the Evasion sectional from Couture International makes this frame a winner in the stationary upholstery category. Suitable for placement indoors or outdoors, the components can be arranged in a wide range of configurations. The relaxed styling also carries a reasonable price point."

• Leather Upholstery, Strada II by Kelvin Ng for Planum/Kelvin Giormani. Judges' comments: "The distinguished use of woven leather calls special attention to this leather sectional by Planum/Kelvin Giormani. With extremely plush cushions to sink into, the perceived value of the complete design measures up to the pricetag."

• Lighting, Gallery collection by David Kitts and David Martin for Hubbardton Forge. Judges' comments: "The fluid lines of the Gallery collection at Hubbardton Forge create very pleasing sculptural forms. We praise the excellent design proportions and the pleasing finish, which give rise to a terrific overall aesthetic at an outstanding value."

• Accessories, Copenhagen bench by Shaun Melvin for Baker Furniture. Judges' comments:
"The sophisticated movement in the lines of the Copenhagen bench by Baker Furniture presents the essence of good taste in design. The chic styling incorporates an elegantly finished surface in a ‘retro' meets ‘West Indies' combination."

• Home office, Reede's Landing by the Aspenhome design team for Aspenhome. Judges' comments: "When it comes to the home office category, the Aspenhome team thought of everything in designing the Reede's Landing collection. The traditional look features modern functionality and outstanding details. With ample storage capability and pleasing proportions, we think this group will appeal to a wide mix of consumers."

• Home entertainment, Louis Phillippe credenza by D. Scott Coley and Tommy McDaniel for Bassett Furniture. Judges' comments: "The ability to offer a superior surround sound system in attractive case pieces moves Bassett Furniture to the head of the class in helping consumers solve their home entertainment challenges without breaking the bank. The Nvelop credenza line builds in a two-speaker soundbar with a wireless subwoofer that connects with just one wire."

• Summer/casual, Embrace cectional by Normand Couture for Couture Jardin. Judges' comments: "The flexibility of the modular elements in the Embrace sectional give Couture Jardin top marks in the summer and casual category. The innovative combination of materials and colors exudes a look with superior comfort."

• Bedroom, Artisan by Berry & Clark Design Associates for Planum/Mobil Fresno. Judges' comments: "The calming, restful ambience of Planum's Artisan bedroom is achieved with a delightful balance of mixed materials. We are glad to see a nice range of pieces and finishes."

• Green Leaf Award, Homecoming Vintage Pine by Tim Annas for Kincaid Furniture. Judges' comments: "The Green Leaf Award goes to a product that meets the most discerning design standards while also meeting a legitimately eco-friendly profile that is substantiated with sustainability criteria. The 2011 Green Leaf Award goes to the Homecoming Vintage Pine collection by Kincaid Furniture, celebrated for its nostalgic theme. The judges acknowledge the compelling charm of the design, describing it ‘rich in its simplicity.'"
