HIGH POINT — Michelle Rosson, former director of North America and Latin America sales and merchandising for leather upholstery source Kuka, has joined leather producer Carolina Custom Leather, which is introducing its first fabric line at the High Point Market this week.
Rosson, who also was director of marketing and merchandising at Thomasville, will be responsible for design, merchandising and the creative direction of Carolina Custom Leather.
Rosson and Todd Stroud, president of the three-year-old Conover, N.C., company, said the goal is to give customers options not provided by offshore sourcing companies that typically limit styles and covers to optimize production.
"It's no, "Have it one way,'" she said, adding, "We're eliminating saying no to the retailer."
The company will go beyond the usual arm and leg custom program by allowing customers to add length, depth and other custom features. The product is domestically made, according to Stroud.
He said the company can operate be agile because of its small size and low overhead, allowing it to offer such features as spring-down cushioning and better construction at no upcharge. Rosson said the company plans to feature distinctive fabrics that include high-end velvets, linens and sophisticated wovens.
Stroud, a former retailer and executive with Bradington-Young, said a key component will be combination fabric and leather collages. One sofa on the company's floor in the Atrium showroom here is in a neutral off-white woven body cloth that blends with a light leather base and arms.
Retail price points for fabric sofas are in the $1,999 range and leather runs $2,499 to $3,999.
Rosson said the company will keep its fabric colorways tight so that options don't become overwhelming.
