Students can enter Waites design competition

ATLANTA - Design students can now enter the second national Raymond Waites Design Competition offered by the Educational Foundation of the International Furnishings and Design Assn.
The deadline for entries is Feb. 12, and the winner - who will receive a $5,000 prize and a trip to High Point - will be announced in early March. Entry criteria, application and detailed information are available at ifdaef.org.
"We are pleased to offer this exciting competition to talented students who are the future of our industry," said Ann Unal, IFDA/EF chair. She said this year's challenge for undergraduate design students across the country will be to create their vision of a master bedroom and bath that reflect a traditional/eclectic mix of furnishings, products and decoration.
The competition's namesake, designer Raymond Waites, said contest organizers are excited about seeing the students' creative ideas.
"The judges will look for rooms that have emotional warmth, are comfortable, functional, friendly, and display an ageless mix of design influences reflecting various cultures," Waites said. Since design student classes usually focus on contemporary assignments, this competition opens an expanded area of study in tune with future client projects, he added.
The winner will receive a $5,000 prize and a trip to the April High Point Market, where they will visit showrooms and attend designer luncheons, events and seminars - and will be the guest of honor at a special event hosted by Waites.
The winning entry and those of 10 finalists will be on display at Market Square & Suites throughout the spring market.
Brad Yandow, the winner of the first Raymond Waites Design Competition, is now on the design and sales team of the new Stickley Audi & Co. showroom in Charlotte, N.C.
The nonprofit IFDA Educational Foundation says it offers more scholarships and grants than any other industry association.
