Furniture & ApplianceMart owner heading to Milwaukee with HomeStores buy

MILWAUKEE — Boston Inc., the parent company of Furniture & ApplianceMart and a Wisconsin Ashley HomeStore licensee, will enter the market with the acquisition of three Ashley corporate HomeStores locations.

The Stevens Point, Wis.-based company confirmed that much to Furniture Today but declined further comment until Sept. 1 — when the stores are expected to change hands.

The 14-store, primarily mid-priced retailer, led by the Fonti family, acquired the HomeStores in Greenfield, a southwest Milwaukee suburb, and in Richfield (about 27 miles northwest of Milwaukee) and plans to take ownership at the end of the month, according to a report by Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

It also plans to reopen a former HomeStore location in Pewaukee — west of Milwaukee and near Waukesha, Wis. — by mid-October, the report said.

In a statement provided to the Journal, Boston President and CEO Bill Fonit said, with the addition of Milwaukee will give it “the largest delivery area of any furniture retailer in the state” and will “dramatically increase our buying power.”

A company spokesman told the Journal plans call for remodeling and using a part of the Milwaukee Ashley locations for the retailers Style By Design business, which will have a separate entrance and feature goods from multiple suppliers.

According to its website, Boston now operates 14 Wisconsin showrooms — five Furniture & ApplianceMarts, six HomeStores, one MattressMart and two outlet stores.
