ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The dollar value of mattress shipments soared in October, posting a 12.5% gain over the same month a year earlier, the International Sleep Products Assn. reported. Bedding unit sales posted a more modest 2.9% gain.
The numbers are from ISPA's October Bedding Barometer report, outlining the performance of 18 large producers, which together account for about 65% of total bedding units and about 74% of the wholesale dollar value of the full market.
The report says the industry remains in positive territory through the first 10 months of the year. Unit sales are up 1.5% for the January-October period, while the dollar value of those units is up 8.7%.
The report indicates that sales of better beds are escalating. The average unit price jumped 9.3% in October, to $216.82. For the first 10 months of the year, the average unit price is up 7.1% to $206.01, ISPA says.
ISPA notes that the performance of the companies participating in the monthly reports may not necessarily reflect the performance of the full mattress industry.
