Kaye
HUNTLEY, Ill. - Walter "Wally" Kaye, who once ran the Wickes furniture chain, has died of complications stemming from Alzheimer's disease, his family said. He was 80.
The Brooklyn-born Kaye was an entrepreneur early in life, selling bagels on New York street corners. He entered Brooklyn College at age 14.
A Korean War-era veteran, Kaye started in the furniture industry as a store owner and later was a merchandiser with Sears Roebuck & Co.
After 14 years with Sears, he joined Wickes Furniture, eventually becoming the company's president and general manager, where he developed a national reputation for innovation and aggressive marketing.
He was honored in 1980 by Bonds for Israel and in 1983 by City of Hope. In 2007, he was named a Pillar of the Industry by the Midwest Furniture Club for a lifetime of achievement.
He is survived by his wife, four children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
