Furniture factory orders jump 12% in September
Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, December 2, 2011
HIGH POINT — New orders in September were 12% above September 2010, according to the latest survey of furniture manufacturers and distributors by the accounting firm Smith Leonard.

It was the second highest monthly increase reported in 2011, and only the third double-digit increase of the year.
Writing in the firm's monthly newsletter, Furniture Insights, Smith Leonard managing partner Ken Smith said price increases implemented in the spring played a role in the September jump. However, most of the increases were only 3% to 5%, he said.
The 12% jump in September came on heels of a 9% increase in August and an 8% increase in July.
"Overall, the results the last couple of months have been encouraging," Smith wrote. "Some 76% of our (survey) participants are only off less than 5% or up - some very nicely."
In addition to the double-digit increase in new orders, the survey found that September's order backlog was 13% ahead of September 2010, while September payrolls rose 10% and September shipments were up 6%.
For the first nine months of 2011, new orders were 6% ahead of the first nine months of last year and shipments were up 3%.
