RoomStore Chairman Robert Shaffner resigns from board

Jay McIntosh -- Furniture Today, December 2, 2011

RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond-based retailer RoomStore's board chairman, Robert C. Shaffner, has resigned from the board for personal reasons, the company said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing this week.

Shaffner, the Top 100 company's chairman since 2005, stepped down on Nov. 22, according to the filing.

"There were no disagreements between Mr. Shaffner and the company, or between Mr. Shaffner and any officers or directors of the company, which led to Mr. Shaffner's decision to resign," the company said.

Shaffner is a former senior vice president and chief financial officer of manufacturer Klaussner Furniture, from which he retired in 2001.

Earlier last month, Curtis Kimbrell stepped down as RoomStore CEO and a board member and was replaced by Steve Giordano, who had been CEO at fellow Top 100 company RoomPlace Furniture, based in Lombard, Ill. Giordano had been chief operating officer at RoomStore before leaving the company last year to go to RoomPlace.

RoomStore operates full-line furniture stores primarily in Virginia, Maryland, the Carolinas and Texas, as well as the Mattress Discounters bedding specialty chain in Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, Delaware and Alabama. The company, which reported a $3.4 million loss on sales of $70.6 million in the fiscal quarter ended Aug. 31, also recently announced that it was closing two full-line stores, two clearance centers and a distribution center in a continuing effort to cut expenses in a weak sales environment.
