Southern Motion to expand with new Mississippi factory
Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, December 6, 2011
BALDWYN, Miss. — Southern Motion will start production early next year at a plant here, hiring 150 employees to handle the company's growing business, the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports.
Company officials said at a press conference Monday that the Baldwyn plant, a 192,500-square-foot former Forefront Golf facility that Southern Motion CEO Guy Lipscomb and business partners purchased in April, eventually could employ 400.
Southern Motion's headquarters and main plant are in Pontotoc, another Northeast Mississippi city about 50 miles away. The producer of recliners and motion upholstery has expanded that plant in recent years, announcing a $7 million, 180,000-square-foot addition in 2010 and hiring an additional 260 workers, the Daily Journal said.
"We're adding another 75 jobs in the next 30 days in Pontotoc," Lipscomb said at the press conference.
Southern Motion's sales have been booming, officials said. Lipscomb said the company has done well in generating orders at furniture markets this year and has been working overtime in Pontotoc.
Company officials said they hope to open in Baldwyn by mid-February, the Daily Journal reported.
