Bedding Yearbook provides overview of changing mattress scene
Compilation of key mattress reports we publish each year
David Perry -- Furniture Today, November 29, 2011
You are mingling with bedding executives at an industry event when one of your colleagues poses this question: Who was the fastest-growing mattress producer last year? And then your colleague ups the ante with another question: Who was the fastest-growing major bedding retailer last year?
You pause, perplexed. But then you pull out our handy Bedding Yearbook, and the answers are literally at your fingertips:
* Memory foam leader Tempur-Pedic posted an astonishing 48.6% increase in its shipments last year, to $676 million. That was the biggest increase by any of the industry's Top 15 producers.
* Bedding specialist Mattress Firm, based in Houston, posted the largest dollar increase last year among the Top 25 Bedding Retailers. It grew its bedding sales by $87.7 million in 2010 as it embarked on an aggressive growth push.
* Tempur-Pedic's direct sales last year grew by 38.9%, to $50 million. That was the largest percentage increase of the Top 25 Bedding Retailers.
Those are just a few of the key facts that are neatly tucked into place in our annual Bedding Yearbook, which provides a compilation of key mattress reports we publish each year, and also introduces some new topics as well.
One of the important responsibilities we tackle each year is that of documenting where the key players stand on the mattress landscape.
On the producer side, we list the Top 15 Bedding Producers, a closely watched list that tells retailers which manufacturers are moving up and which ones are moving down.
On the retail side of the business, we list the Top 25 Bedding Retailers, a mix of bedding specialists, furniture stores, department stores, warehouse clubs and others. And every two years we take stock of key bedding distribution channels; our latest report is in this yearbook.
Inside you also will find a tribute to bedding legend Roy Unger, one of my mentors.
And you'll get a rare look inside Sealy's burn lab, where mattresses are tested for compliance with the federal mattress flammability standard. We also outline the repositioning of a longtime bedding brand: Jamison Bedding.
There's always something happening in Mattressville. We hope you enjoy this overview of the changing face of the mattress industry.
