Global Textile Alliance launches U.S. cut-and-sew
Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, December 12, 2011
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Global Textile Alliance, a supplier of mattress ticking and upholstery fabric, has launched a cut-and-sew operation at its factory here.
Company officials believe the new venture, which currently employs about 35 people, is the first of its kind in the U.S.
GTA president Tim Dolan said the cut-and-sew program should enhance its domestic fabric production and enable upholstery manufacturers to receive their raw materials more quickly.
"The biggest issue right now is speed to market," said Dolan. "We think we can be an asset to the U.S. manufacturer by bringing cut-and-sew back to the States."
Currently, furniture manufacturers either have in-house cut-and-sew operations or they import cut-and-sew covers from China or Mexico. Dolan said he believes GTA is the first fabric producer with a domestic cut-and-sew operation.
The cut-and-sew covers will be made with fabric produced at the Reidsville factory, and will supplement the fabric and covers GTA imports from China, Dolan said.
About 50,000 square feet of factory space is set aside for the cut-and-sew operation, and Dolan said it could be expanded to 100,000 square feet if business conditions warrant.
