GARDNER, MASS. — Rome Furniture, a leading retailer of furniture, bedding and home accents in central Massachusetts for 72 years, is holding a special sale to mark the retirement of Arthur Rome, its longtime president. The sale starts Thur., Sept. 14, at Rome Furniture, located at 562 Main St. in Gardner.

Rome Furniture was founded as an appliance store on Main Street in Gardner by Jim Rome and his brother, Buddy Rome, in 1945. When Buddy passed away, Joe Rome — their youngest brother — joined the company. As the market grew, Jim and Joe Rome expanded the business to include furniture and televisions.

In 1972, Jim’s son Arthur Rome joined the company after completing college at the University of Hartford. Bruce Rome, Arthur’s cousin and Joe’s son, joined the company in 1990. The company moved to its current store location in 1998, renovating and restoring an historic building formerly used as a furniture factory. The store features 60,000 square feet of showroom space displayed on four floors.

At one time, the family also owned and operated another Gardner furniture landmark, The Factory Coop on Logan Street. That store, also in a four-story historic building, was in business for 33 years before closing in 2016.

In 2001, Arthur Rome became president of Rome Furniture, and Bruce was named vice president. Arthur is now stepping back from his leadership role, and Bruce is taking the reins at the store.

“Over the years, Rome Furniture has become central Massachusetts and New England’s destination for stylish, quality furnishings at an exceptional value,” said Arthur Rome. “This sale event offers customers an opportunity to buy brand name furniture at sharply reduced prices. We look forward to seeing many old friends during the sale.”

“We’re excited for the opportunity to move out the current inventory,” said Bruce Rome. “We plan to restructure by adding new lines with better values and a larger selection.”

Rome Furniture features furniture and bedding products from well-known brands such as Best Home Furnishings, Canadel, Flexsteel and Vaughan-Bassett. The store also offers a wide assortment of Amish-made furniture brands, solid-wood bedroom and dining room furniture sourced from leading New England producers, and high-quality area rugs. A huge selection of product will be available during the sale event, with discounts varying depending on the category.

“We take great pride in our fine selection of American-made living room, office, bedroom, kitchen and dining furniture,” Bruce Rome said. “At our store, shoppers can browse more than 1.5 acres of the best values in furniture. Special orders and custom products are also available, so there’s always much more than meets the eye at Rome Furniture.”

The store’s website is located at www.romefurniture.com . The event is being assisted by two home furnishing promotion specialists Planned Furniture Promotions (PFP) & PMP Sales.
