‘Imports 101’ set for High Point

HIGH POINT – Steve Fodor, founder and CEO of customs brokerage specialist Customs Services & Solutions, will lead “Imports 101,” a day-long course examining the process of importing goods into the United States from start to finish.

The event takes place Thursday, Oct. 12, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (eastern) at Wingate by Wyndham, 3901Sedgebrook St. in High Point.

The class, which will teach the basics about importing into the U.S., will help new importers with their understanding and execution of importing in compliance with U.S. Customs regulations. Taking this class shows due diligence in meeting this requirement.

It also is an opportunity for individuals involved in importing, customs brokerage, freight forwarding, warehousing and distribution to expand their knowledge or get a strong fundamental understanding of the import process and the compliance issues that may entail.

For industry employers, it is a valuable tool to provide a well-rounded basic training for new employees in the import business or those that just need a better understanding of importing processes.

The class will include a workshop session so that participants get hands-on experience with the process. Class materials will be provided. Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided, though lunch is not included.

Topics covered include: the "flow" of an import shipment, from "order placed" through "product received"; the parties involved in importing such as importers, suppliers, freight forwarders, customs brokers, government agencies and more; the roles and responsibilities of the parties; terms of sale and the impact of those terms on the flow of the import shipment; U.S. Customs and other U.S. government agencies rules and regulations; risks and responsibilities of a U.S. importer; the importance of due diligence and reasonable care; and the Harmonized Tariff Schedule and duty rates.

Cost for the course is $395. Click here for more information and to register. Those who register by Sept. 30 can receive a discount of $50 by using the code “earlybirdHP.”

I'm Powell Slaughter, senior editor at Furniture/Today. I returned to the publication in January 2015 after nine years of writing about furniture retail strategies and best practices at a monthly magazine focusing on home furnishings retail operations. Prior to that, I spent 10 years with F/T covering wood furniture, the last five of those as case goods editor. While I cover occasional, home entertainment and home office here, a major responsibility is expanding our attention to the logistics side of the industry. I hope my articles will encourage a dialogue with retailers, vendors, third-party logistics specialists and carriers. I’d love to hear your ideas, concerns and suggestions for smoother flow of material and goods.
