Dickson Furniture renames its two primary business units

HOUSTON — Furniture importer and manufacturer Dickson Furniture Inds. has renamed its two primary business units.
The manufacturing side of the business, formerly called Star Products, is now Dickson Furniture Manufacturers LLC. It produces some residential laminate bedrooms, but primarily makes hospitality and contract furniture including products for student housing.
Dickson's import business is now Dickson Furniture International LLC. This business unit carries a line of wood bedroom and casual dining as well as motion upholstery produced in Asia.
In another key shift, the company will begin contracting with designers to design its imported furniture instead of relying on agents to source and distribute its line. It also will use its own on the ground quality control personnel on a contact basis rather than using the agent's quality control personnel.
In charge of product development is Rodney Tippit. He joined the company in May from Houston-based retailer Finger Furniture, where he was case goods buyer for about 10 years and also was vice president of Finger's group of Ashley Furniture HomeStores. Earlier, he was a buyer for Lack's Furniture in Victoria, Texas.
An investor group including CEO Doug Mueller acquired Dickson Furniture Inds. earlier this year.
"They have new ownership, and what they are trying to do is better align the names of the companies with what they are actually doing," said Terri Phillips, a company spokesperson. "They are being clearer about their business units."
Founded in 1976, Dickson employs on average 100 workers, a number that can increase to 200 during busy seasons. Including its 80,000-square-foot plant in Houston, it has a total of about 300,000 square feet of warehouse space in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and El Paso and also owns its fleet of trucks.
