No cause found in 2010 Michigan furniture store explosion
Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, December 28, 2011
WAYNE, Mich. — A nearly yearlong investigation could not determine the cause of the explosion that killed two employees of the William C. Franks Furniture store here and leveled the building last December, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Consumers Energy Co. said in a 65-page report that investigators found a two-inch break in a gas main near the building but don't know if it malfunctioned before or after the explosion. They also couldn't determine whether there was a gas leak in the building, or whether gas came in through a sewer line.
Employees James Zell, 64, and Leslie Machniak, 54, died in the incident. Owner Paul Franks suffered serious burns.
Stephanie Christesen, Franks Furniture vice president and Paul Franks' daughter, told the Free Press that her father is "doing much better."
The store has been operating out of a nearby warehouse.
