Charleston, S.C.'s Sofa Super Store to close
Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, December 30, 2011
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Sofa Super Store will close its two stores here after two decades in business, with its owners saying the retailer could not survive the downturn in the economy and the housing market, the Charleston Post and Courier reports.
In 2007, another Sofa Super Store location was destroyed in a fire that killed nine Charleston firefighters. This year, the company agreed to pay $1.9 million to settle lawsuits brought by families of the firefighters.
"After 20 years of serving the greater Charleston area, Sofa Super Store will be going out of business," the company said in a prepared statement Thursday. "We are very grateful for the support the community has shown us over the years, but the devastated housing market and struggling economy have forced us to close our stores."
The Post and Courier said the stores will close Jan. 3 and 4 and a liquidation sale will begin Jan. 5. The stores are on Rivers Avenue in North Charleston and Johnnie Dodd Boulevard in Mount Pleasant.
