Youth bed canopy, dining table recalled

Thomas Russell -- Furniture Today, January 4, 2012

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued recall notices for two products sold by Williams-Sonoma divisions, a youth bed canopy at Pottery Barn Kids and a dining table at West Elm.

The company agreed to voluntarily recall the products in the U.S. and also in Canada, in cooperation with consumer health and safety agency Health Canada.

About 7,700 of the Madeline Youth Bed Canopies sold in the U.S. and 230 sold in Canada were recalled due to a potential fall hazard.

The recall is in response to consumer complaints that the connections of the posts on the top rails of the canopy can come apart.

The company said it is aware of 33 reports of the components of the canopy falling as a result of this malfunction. One of these incidents caused a cut that required stitches and there were nine other reports of minor cuts, bruises and bumps.

Made in Vietnam, the canopy was sold as an option on the Madeline bedroom collection at Pottery Barn Kids stores from December 2003 to August 2011, the CPSC said. As an option, the canopy retailed from $150 to $300.

Consumers have been advised to remove the canopy from the bed and contact Pottery Barn toll free at (855) 662-4114 for a free repair.

West Elm, meanwhile, agreed to voluntarily recall 830 Dover dining tables sold in the U.S. and 10 in Canada. The recall is in response to consumer reports that the wooden base can collapse and cause the glass top to fall.

West End told the CPSC it is aware of 14 reports of the tables collapsing or breaking. It said one consumer also reported one consumer experiencing a leg bruise due to the table collapse.

The product was made in China and sold at West Elm stores and online from July through October 2011. Retailing at about $500, it has a SKU number 2188233 printed on a white label on the underside of a center beam.

Consumers are advised to stop using the table and can also request a full store credit, the CPSC said. They can reach West Elm toll free at (855) 369-4335. West Elm will schedule a free return pickup of the table.
