2 Ashley HomeStores coming to greater Detroit

DETROIT— An Ashley HomeStore license will open the first two HomeStore in the greater Detroit market this year with plans for up to 13 throughout Southeast Michigan.

Cole Bawek, director of public relations for Ashley Furniture Inds. confirmed a local report that the first two stores will open in Westland, Mich., — between Detroit and Ann Arbor — in mid-November and in Woodhaven, Mich., southwest of the city, in early December. The stores will be operated by Zahi Abdelaziz of Aziz Group, the HomeStore licensee.

“We’re looking at opening more,” Bawek said, noting Aziz wants to open a total of 13 in the area over the next five years, but he couldn’t disclose additional details yet.

The 30,000-square-foot Westland store will be located in a former Bed Bath & Beyond space, while the 35,000-square-foot Woodhaven location will open in a former Kmart.

While the stores will be Ashley’s first HomeStores in greater Detroit and Abdelaziz’s first HomeStores, Abdelaziz is not new to the furniture industry; he currently operated two full-line stores — Home Furniture and The Boulevard — in Montgomery, Ala., both carrying Ashley among other lines.
