Bedding producers feel pinch from foam price hike
October 18, 2017,
HIGH POINT — Bedding producers here say they’ve gotten some unwelcome news lately: Foam prices are going up, substantially.
In response, some producers are shifting to non-foam constructions, including coil-edge designs and latex models.
A recent 15% foam increase is going to lead to higher wholesale bedding prices, said Gerry Borreggine, president of Top 10 producer Therapedic. “That’s a price increase we can’t swallow.”
Borreggine said foam prices have increased about 20% since April. “We’ve never had increases this precipitous in this short period of time,” he said.
“Foam prices have gone through the roof,” agreed Richard Fleck, president of Paramount. He said he recently got a 15% increase, one which pushes foam prices up 28% overall this year.
Paramount is aggressively moving away from foam encasement in its bedding lines, Fleck noted. He said the new HD Super Duty line, the first complete refresh of the line since it was launched in 2009, features coils all the way to the borders and is designed to provide a consistent sleep surface.
Kingsdown is responding to higher foam prices by turning to an all-latex line this market, the Sleep Haven collection. It is made with 100% Oeko-Tex certified Dunlop latex and retails from $3,499 to $4,299.
Kevin Damewood, executive vice president of sales, said latex has strong supporters and noted that the company will keep latex in its lineup moving forward.
